The Larimer County Sheriff's Office Traffic Safety Unit is comprised of one sergeant and four deputies. The primary objective of the unit is to increase community awareness of traffic safety issues. This is done through educational programs and equitable and appropriate traffic statute enforcement.
The traffic unit works in partnership with other organizations such as Safe Kids of Larimer County, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Poudre Fire Authority, and Loveland Fire Rescue Authority in educating the community, children, and teens in the importance of motorist/passenger safety and bicycle/pedestrian safety.
Motor vehicle accidents are a primary concern for the traffic unit. In 2017, Larimer County experienced 36 fatal automobile accidents which ranked Larimer County 7th in the state for fatal accidents. Three of the fatal accidents of 2017 were related to impaired driving. Through its activity in the Northern Colorado Traffic Safety Task Force, the unit works with numerous other Northern Colorado law enforcement agencies in conducting education, directive enforcement, and extra DUI patrols in an ongoing effort to reduce the fatal automobile accidents in our county.
