Missing persons should be reported as soon as possible. You do not have to wait 24 to 72 hours to report a missing person. For children under 12 and at-risk adults, you should call 911 as soon as you determine they are missing. For missing teenagers and adults, please call our non-emergency number (970) 416-1985 as soon as you are certain they are not returning home on their own.
Law enforcement will need as much identifying information as possible including height, weight, hair color, eye color, a description of the clothing the person was last wearing, and a description of the car if they were driving. Law enforcement will also want to know about any identifying characteristics of the person such as scars, birthmarks or tattoos, as well as things like disabilities or other medical conditions.
Any information that can be provided as to where they might go, who they might be with, etc. will be helpful.
If the missing person is a child, information about the person who may have taken them will also be needed. A current photograph should be provided. An Amber Alert can be issued if the criteria are met.
Amber Alert Criteria
1.) The child must be 17 years of age or younger.
2.) The child must be in immediate danger of serious bodily harm or death.
3.) There must be enough descriptive information to believe a broadcast will assist in the recovery.
4.) The activation must be recommended by the local law enforcement agency to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
