In 2020, over 56,000 people overdosed on fentanyl in the United States (Voices for Awareness). Unfortunately, Larimer County has not been immune to the impact of this illegal substance, experiencing its effects on our community firsthand.

Yesterday, Dan Bontz was announced as the newest Advisory Board member for Voices for Awareness. Dan is a seasoned Police Officer with the Loveland Police Department.  With a career spanning two decades in law enforcement, his wealth of knowledge and experience brings welcome insight to the mission of the organization.

Dan has served the City of Loveland since 1998 and has most recently been assigned to the Northern Colorado Drug Task Force as a narcotics detective. He has 18 years of narcotics-related assignments reflecting his deep commitment to addressing the challenges posed by illegal drugs within our community. Dan has also served as a dedicated member of the Colorado Drug Investigators Association (CDIA) for 13 years and currently serves as the CDIA Vice President for Region 4.

“Dan’s experience working to eradicate these deadly drugs from the streets will be beneficial in his new role as a member of this Advisory Board,” said Lt. Mark Hertz, a Lieutenant for the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office working with the Drug Task Force. “Dan has valuable insight working with those who have substance abuse issues, and his experience will be beneficial to this organization.”

“Bontz is part of a 70-year legacy of policing in Loveland,” said Chief Tim Doran. “His father served the Loveland community before him, and Dan is continuing that legacy. His heart is in this work, and he will be a great addition to the board.”

The goal of the organization is to raise awareness to the reality that fentanyl is found in virtually every street drug today. “Fentanyl is highly addictive and can cause sudden death. Today, illicit fentanyl is found in cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, and counterfeit pills disguised as Oxycodone, Percocet, Adderall and even marijuana. Fentanyl is killing Americans every 5 minutes. Americans of all socioeconomic groups and ages are dying from first time use (Voices for Awareness).”
