Joseph Major was sentenced today to 10 years of Sex Offender Intensive Supervision Probation, 18 months in Community Corrections, and 120 days in jail, following a guilty plea of one count of Sexual Exploitation of a Child, a Class 5 Felony, and one count of Child Abuse, a Class 2 Misdemeanor. The 8th Judicial District Attorney’s Office secured Major’s guilty plea on April 3rd, 2024.

In the summer of 2023, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children gave a tip to the Internet Crimes Against Children’s Colorado Task Force regarding a series of images containing child pornography. Following an investigation, it was discovered that the owner of the device was Joseph Major, a, then, paraprofessional in the Thompson School District. During his interview with police, Mr. Major resigned from his position with the Thompson School District. He was arrested on December 7th, 2023.

Some of the requirements for Mr. Major's probation include: 

  • He will undergo sex offender-specific evaluation and identification. Requiring sex offender registration for the next 20 years. 
  • He will not subscribe to any internet service provider nor access the internet in any way until approved by the probation officer in consultation with the community supervision team. 
  • He will not have contact with any children until approved by a probation officer in consultation with the community supervision team.
  • He will undergo both mental health and substance abuse evaluation and any treatment programming that is recommended. 

Exploitation of children is a crime that can have wide-reaching and long-term effects that can include victims becoming perpetrators themselves.
