After careful consideration and largely guided by the direction of the insurers involved, the Board of County Commissioners has reached a $5 million settlement to resolve the civil case related to the death of Brent Thompson.

The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office contacted Mr. Thompson during a traffic stop in early 2023. During the interaction, he ran from law enforcement to avoid arrest. A deputy used a Taser to prevent him from running onto the interstate; however, Mr. Thompson was incapacitated in the roadway, struck by a vehicle, and died. This incident was investigated by the Critical Incident Response Team [https://www.larimer.gov/sites/default/files/uploads/2023/brent_thompson.pdf].

The insurers will provide the majority of the settlement funds. This resolution allows County leadership and the Larimer County Sheriff's Office to continue focusing on our primary mission: serving the residents of Larimer County and ensuring the safety of our community.

The Board of County Commissioners acknowledges that this settlement cannot undo the loss experienced by Mr. Thompson's family and loved ones. We recognize the profound impact this incident has had on everyone involved. While this marks the conclusion of the legal process, the Board's thoughts remain with all affected by this case.
