Ampelio Arangure was sentenced yesterday to 20 years in the Colorado Department of Correction, following a guilty plea to one count of Sex Assault on a Child-Pattern of Abuse, a class 3 felony, and one count of Attempted Sex Assault on a Child, a class 5 felony. Following his sentence in the Department of Corrections, Mr. Arangure will be required to register as a sex offender and have no contact with anyone under the age of 18, beyond his own child. Mr. Arangure entered his guilty plea on July 15th, 2024.

In June 2021, the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office responded to a complaint of a sexual assault upon a child that had occurred three years prior. During the investigation, it was revealed that three victims, all siblings, had been sexually abused repeatedly by Arangure for multiple years. For most of the victims, the abuse began at around six years old and continued into their teens.

In February of 2024, this case went to trial and all three victims testified and shared their story with the jury. However, the jury could not reach a unanimous verdict, and a mistrial was declared.

After that trial, a plea agreement was reached to avoid putting the victims through an additional trial, resulting in Mr. Arangure’s sentencing. The plea in this case had a sentencing range from 4-24 years.

The prosecution team, led by Senior Deputy District Attorney, Luke Birky, spoke of the victims’ bravery and tenacity in coming forward. “These three young women showed incredible courage in testifying about the abuse they endured as children,” said Birky. "Their strength is what enabled the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office to investigate these crimes and help us to hold a predator accountable and to make this community safer for the most vulnerable.”

All three victims and a cousin spoke to the Judge to share their story as well as the impact of Arangure’s abuse.

“Coming forward and testifying against their assailant took incredible bravery,” said District Attorney, Gordon McLaughlin. “I'm thankful to our team for their hard work in seeking justice for these courageous victims and ensuring our community will be safe from this defendant.”
