Senior exemption portability, Disabled Veteran exemption changes to benefit county property owners
Changes to the Senior Homestead Exemption, Disabled Veteran Exemption, and Gold Star Spouse Exemption for 2025 will benefit Larimer County homeowners.
“These new property tax savings honor the service and sacrifice of our Veterans and give back the exemption to any senior who moved their primary residence within the state since 2020,” said Larimer County Assessor Bob Overbeck.
The Senior Homestead Exemption has remained in effect since it was reinstated in 2012 and depends on the Colorado Legislature's annual funding.
Next year, the state of Colorado will allow residents who moved or relocated within their county or from one Colorado county to another Colorado county from January 1, 2020, to December 31, 2024, to receive or be reinstated in the Senior Homestead Exemption Program. Previously, those who moved from their primary residence to another residence lost the exemption. The Larimer County Assessor will accept applications for only the Senior exemption with the new provisions from January 2, 2025, to March 15, 2025.
The Disabled Veteran and Gold Star Spouse Exemption has also changed to include those Veterans with unemployability status, as determined by the Department of Veteran Affairs, be treated equally to a Veteran with 100% permanent disability.
Colorado voters in November 2024 approved a ballot measure to include Veterans with unemployability status as part of the Disabled Veteran and Gold Star Spouse Exemption. Apply for the Disabled Veteran and Gold Star Spouse Exemption after January 2, 2025. The deadline to apply for the Disabled Veteran and Gold Star Spouse Exemption is July 1, 2025.
The Gold Star Spouse Exemption still extends the exemption eligibility to the spouse of a deceased, disabled Veteran member of the U.S. Armed Forces.
Forms for both exemptions that need to be filled out and submitted can be located on the Senior and Disabled Veteran webpage Senior and Disabled Veteran webpage, and contain instructions on how to fill out and submit both forms.
