LCSO Investigating Auto-Pedestrian Crash on Interstate
A driver who fled a traffic stop, jumped out of a vehicle and ran across the highway was hit by oncoming traffic, shutting down I25 for several hours on Monday.
On April 14, 2025 at approximately 5:30pm, Larimer County Sheriff’s Office deputies initiated a traffic stop in the area of Rocky Mountain Avenue and Highway 34 in Loveland. The driver drove away from the stop, and deputies initiated a vehicle pursuit. The suspect continued driving recklessly southbound on I25 before coming to a stop at approximately mile marker 245, near Mead, due to a flat tire.
The male suspect exited his vehicle with a firearm and ran across the interstate. The suspect jumped over the center median and was struck by an oncoming vehicle in the northbound lanes. Aid was immediately rendered until medical arrived on scene.
Three deputies sustained minor injuries, and were treated and released. The suspect sustained serious injuries and was transported to an area hospital.
“Thank you to our local partners for their support during this resource-intensive incident,” stated Undersheriff Joe Shellhammer. “The suspect displayed a complete disregard for the safety of others on the highway, driving recklessly and refusing to comply with law enforcement.”
The highway was closed for approximately 3.5 hours while law enforcement processed the scene. The investigation is ongoing and no further information will be released at this time.
