Sky View Campground

Sky View Campground is a 6-acre recreational development project near Carter Lake, opening to reserved campers officially for the first time, on May 20, 2022. This exciting project is the first campground catering to large groups in Larimer County. 

Durable paved infrastructure (asphalt road and parking lot) will allow Larimer County Natural Resources to better serve the public, especially those individuals with limited mobility, and is a strategy for more efficient and effective long-term maintenance of the campground. 

Included in the 2007 Reservoir Parks Master Plan, and again in the 2017 Reservoir Parks Master Plan, Sky View Campground was unanimously approved in 2017 by the Board of County Commissioners. Extensive community input was sought and received, which was considered in development of Sky View's features and design.

Larimer County Natural Resources breaks ground on new Sky View Campground at Carter Lake

LOVELAND – Larimer County Department of Natural Resources (LCDNR) is excited to announce the start of construction for Sky View Campground, a new six-acre recreation development at Carter Lake reservoir, located along County Road 31 in Loveland. Larimer County Commissioner Jody Shadduck-McNally, Natural Resources and Engineering staff, along with project partners marked the occasion with a photo opportunity on Tuesday, May 25.

Construction of the campground is expected through October 2021. Construction hours are 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. While construction is taking place, roads in the Carter Lake area will remain open. Construction completion is slated for fall 2021 with a grand opening in spring 2022. Designed as the first campground in Larimer County catering to large groups, Sky View will have a total of 15 campsites divided among three pods, accommodating up to 120 people.

The design caters to groups looking to camp together for reunions, special occasions, and other events. As a fully paved campground, Sky View will be able to accommodate both RV and tent campers. In addition, the paved site will make some areas of the campground accessible to individuals with mobility challenges. Other features of the campground include a group pavilion, electric hook ups, water hydrants, restrooms, and communal fire rings.

Sky View Campground was unanimously approved in 2017 by the Board of County Commissioners in the Reservoir Parks Master Plan. Extensive community input was considered in the development of Sky View's features and design. Sky View Campground is a capital improvement project funded partially from visitor day use and camping fee revenues collected at Larimer County parks and open spaces.

Other funding partners contributing to the project include Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO), Bureau of Reclamation, and Friends of Larimer County. The new campground will cost $1.9 million.

LOVELAND – Larimer County Department of Natural Resources (LCDNR) is excited to announce the official opening of Sky View Campground, a new six-acre recreation development at Carter Lake reservoir, located along County Road 31 in Berthoud. Larimer County, Great Outdoors Colorado, Colorado Airstream Club, and the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, alongside other project partners marked the occasion with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, May 12.

Designed as the first campground in Larimer County catering to large groups, Sky View has a total of 15 campsites divided among three pods, accommodating up to 120 people. The design caters to groups looking to camp together for reunions, special occasions, and other events. The new campground cost $1.9 million. 

Sky View Campground is a capital improvement project funded partially from visitor day use and camping fee revenues collected at Larimer County Natural Resources properties. Other funding partners contributing to the project include Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO), U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, and Friends of Larimer County.

Group reservations at Sky View opened in January 2022, and the campground opens officially to reserved campers for the first-time beginning May 20, 2022. Summer reservations are filling quickly.

  1. How many campers can Sky View accommodate at full capacity?

    The campground has 15 sites which can host up to 8 people each. At full capacity, the campground can accommodate 120 people.

  2. What amenities can be expected at Sky View?

    Amenities include 15 campsites that can accommodate tents or RVs with electrical hookups, potable water, a large pavilion, group fire ring area, two vault toilets, viewing area. The campground is being designed to accommodate larger group reservations as well as those with more limited mobility.

  3. How do I make a reservation at Sky View Campground?

    Reservations will open January 1, 2022.

    • To reserve the entire Skyview Campground (which includes all 3 Group Electric Pods - VP1, VP2, VP3) from 2 years - 181 days in advance of the arrival date, please call the Reserve America at 1-800-397-7795 or book online at www.larimercamping.com.
    • Pods (VP1, VP2, and VP3 each contain a grouping of 5 electric sites) are available to reserve online or through the call center from 180 days to 1 day in advance of the arrival date.
    • Individual sites can be reserved one-month in advance.

  4. Did you seek public input for developing this campground?

    Yes. Extensive public input was sought and obtained through the 2017 Master Plan process to develop the concept for the campground, which has guided subsequent design. Over 100,000 notifications were mailed regarding input opportunities, and 3,000 people provided comments regarding the plan. Further input has been collected this summer via a recreationalist focus group and site walking tour for neighbors near the project.

  5. Are there any additional projects planned for Carter Lake in the near future?

    There are very limited projects left to complete at Carter Lake. Planned potential improvements include campground upgrades, marina area improvements, day use/parking improvements, and additional pocket swim beaches. Refer to Master Plan for further details.
