The Larimer County Sheriff's Office will never call to demand payment for an inmate's bond, early release, ankle monitors, or other fees related to incarceration. 

LCSO has gotten many reports from people who have a loved one in jail. The caller claims to be a Larimer County official and demands payment for the inmate's release. THIS IS A SCAM. If you have a friend or family member in jail and receive a call like this, hang up. Do not provide any personal or financial information.

  1. How can I find out if someone is in jail?

    The easiest way is to search for an inmate by name.  You may also call (970) 498-5200 and ask if a specific person is in jail. By state law, the identity of persons in jail is public information.

  2. How long does it take for a person to be processed and released from jail?

    That depends on how many other people are being arrested and released during that same time period. Before an inmate can be properly booked and released, they must be cooperative with deputies. 

    Arrestees who are combative are placed in holding cells until they choose to cooperate. Evenings, weekends, and holidays are traditionally the busiest times for the booking unit.

  3. Can booking provide me with contact information for the arresting agency of an inmate?

    No, booking does not have this information readily available. Most agencies are listed on the Internet or in the phone book.

  4. Can someone be held in jail without being charged with or accused of a crime?

    Yes. In some instances a person can be brought into the jail on a Detoxification Hold. Individuals brought in on this type of hold are not considered under arrest, but statutorily can be held in the jail as a last resort and only for a short period of time.

  5. Can I find out when an inmate is being transferred to another facility?

    No. For security reasons inmates will not be advised when moves to other facilities will occur, nor will this information be provided to outside individuals. After an inmate has transferred, they may call friends and family to advise them of the move.

  6. How do I bail someone out of jail?

    Bonds can be posted 24 hours a day. There are different types of bonds. If you don't know the individuals’ bond type, you can look them up online.  Using this tool, you can find an individual’s inmate # and Jail ID, which you may need to post bonds online.

    If posting the bond using cash, you will need to use the Kiosk located at the jail’s entrance.  Cash bonds can also be posted online or over the phone (1-888-604-7888) using AllPaid.  Jail staff will also accept money orders and cashier's checks at the release window.

    • Surety bonds are business transactions between you and a bonding agent. Jail staff can not recommend any individual bonding agent.  Information on bond persons is available online or via the telephone directory.
       
    • Property bonds are completed at the Justice Center, 201 Laporte Ave, Fort Collins. The only type of collateral accepted is land. The court will not accept automobiles, RVs, ATVs, or any other type of property other than land. Contact the Justice Center for property bonds.
       

    • A Personal Recognizance bond means the inmate can sign on their own, without any collateral.

      Personal Recognizance with Co-Obligor requires a second individual to sign on the bond with the inmate. No collateral is necessary upon signing the bond; however, if the inmate fails to appear, you will be financially responsible for the amount indicated on the bond. These bonds must be completed in person at the jail.

  7. Can jail staff recommend a bonding agent?

    No. Jail staff is forbidden from recommending for or against any individual bonding agent. 

  8. How do I turn myself in for an active warrant?

    Arrive at the jail lobby and speak with staff. You can help expedite this process in many ways. Arrive at the jail sober, bring a government issued ID, court documents, cash (for bonding purposes), necessary medications in original bottle, eye glasses or contacts, and as little personal property as possible. Outside books or electronics are not allowed. Smoking is not allowed.  Tobacco, E-Cigarettes, and knives of any size are not allowed and will be destroyed.

    If you plan to quickly bond out after surrendering, the best time to turn yourself in is 8:30 - 9:00 am.  Booking does not accept checks as payment, so it is best to bring cash. Credit cards are accepted, but additional fees apply.

  9. Can I call an inmate in jail?

    No. Inmates can call out, but incoming calls to inmates are not allowed. If you are trying to get someone bonded out from booking, you may call (970) 498-5200 and speak to a staff member. Staff will not pass messages to inmates.

  10. How can I stop an inmate from calling me?

    If you receive an unwanted call from an inmate, follow the directions through the automated telephone system to put a phone block in place. The phone block stops all calls from inmates at the jail. 

    If you have further problems or cannot initiate the block, you may call (970) 498-5200 and ask a staff member for assistance.

  11. I am unable to receive collect calls. How can I get calls from someone in jail?

  12. An inmate has advised me that he or she is having trouble making calls to me. Why is this happening?

    Either you cannot receive collect calls on that line and you don’t have a prepaid account set up, or you may have your telephone forwarded. Forwarded calls are not allowed for inmates. Additionally, inmates are not allowed to participate in three-way calls. 

    If you attempt to initiate a three-way call, you will be disconnected. If there is a protection order in place between two parties, any phone numbers associated with the protected party will be blocked.

  13. When is inmate visitation?

    Off-site visitation is offered seven days a week. Visits are initiated by inmates with no advance scheduling. Video visitation can take place off-site via almost any smart phone or internet connected PC with a webcam and microphone.

  14. Can I mail things to an inmate?

    No. Items will be returned to the sender. Inmates are allowed to purchase additional hygiene or comfort items through the commissary. 

    Inmates also have access to over 7,000 books via a digital library. You can deposit money in their inmate account for such purchases.  You can do this online, over the phone (1-866-232-1899), or at the kiosk in the jail lobby.

  15. What happens to inmate account moneys?

    Inmates are allowed to use the money in their inmate account to purchase commissary items, pay booking and bonding fees, and pay for certain medical services, etc. They cannot share commissary or other property with other inmates. 

    If they still have money in their account upon release, they will receive a check for the balance. If they have a negative balance upon release and do not pay the balance in a reasonable time, the amount may be sent to collections.

  16. Do inmates need money for incarceration?

    Yes and No. There are several reasons inmates may request family to provide funds. The two primary reasons inmates request money are for bonding and commissary. Commissary is optional. Inmates are provided three meals a day, free of charge. General hygiene items are provided to all inmates. 

    A variety of additional items, such as snacks and specialty hygiene items are available for purchase through commissary. An inmate can also incur a number of fees, depending on their needs. Every inmate not on a writ is charged a $30 booking fee. There is also a $10 bonding fee for each case.  Medical charges co-pay for services and programs charge various fees for a variety of services including notary and haircuts.

    If an inmate is indigent, they can receive many services free of charge. No inmate is denied medical treatment, regardless of financial status. An electronic accounting system tracks all unpaid debts for future collection of funds. 

  17. How do I deposit money for an inmate to purchase commissary?

    Inmate money deposits may be made 24 hours a day online, over the phone (1-866-232-1899), or at the kiosk in the jail lobby. The internet and phone deposit process will accept credit and debit card deposits only while the lobby kiosk will also accept cash deposits in addition to credit and debit card deposits. 

    There is an administrative fee associated with all credit and debit card deposits. Checks will NOT be accepted. If a check is mailed to an inmate, the check will be returned or placed in the inmate’s property, but not deposited into their account.

  18. Can I get information about the medical condition/medications for the inmate?

    No. Due to privacy requirements (HIPAA) no medical information will be given to callers.

  19. As the victim of a crime how can I be notified of an inmate's release from custody?

    We make victim notification of release or transfer of an inmate via the V.I.N.E. system (Victim Information and Notification Everyday). You can enroll in this automated system online or by calling (888) 263-8463. Additional information regarding this service can be obtained from your victim advocate.

  20. Are there any programs to improve the lives of inmates?

    Larimer County Jail has a Programs team dedicated to supporting inmates’ successful reintegration into the community. Working with community partners, our team has developed a community care approach to reentry. 

    Our efforts battle the cycle of incarceration through individual interventions that improve the mind, body, and spirit. We also provide family support, community outreach, and systemic change initiatives. We champion individuals when they are ready for change, working with them to achieve their goals.

  21. How do I pickup an inmate's property from the jail?

    If an inmate is being transferred to Department of Corrections (DOC) and has property they cannot take with them, they can either have someone pick it up for them or opt to have it destroyed. 

    If you would like to pick up an inmate's property, please come to the Jail front desk between 6:00am and 11:00pm Monday-Friday. 

  22. Are there any other personal items that can be left for an inmate?

    Yes. The following medical items are approved to be brought in for inmates:

    • CPAP machines
    • Specialty braces (prescribed, not over the counter)
    • Prosthetics devices
    • Glasses/Contacts (no cases or accessories)
    • Dentures (no cups or accessories)
    • Hearing aids
    • Or other items as medically necessary, on a case-by-case basis

    These items must be dropped off at the front desk at the jail between 6:00 am and 8:00 pm, Monday through Friday, excluding county holidays. Nothing else.
