OVERVIEW:

This project will reconstruct an approximately 2-mile section of CR 50E (Country Club Road) to improve safety, address deteriorating pavement conditions, and enhance capacity and accessibility for all users. The design will follow recommendations from a 2023 corridor study.

LOCATION:

The project corridor extends from Highway 1 to Turnberry Road.

WHAT IS BEING PROPOSED:

Project Details:

The project will transform the corridor with a new roadway cross-section that includes:

  • Two 11-foot wide travel lanes
  • New 4-foot wide paved shoulders for improved safety
  • A detached 10-foot wide multiuse path to accommodate pedestrians and bicyclists.
  • A new roundabout at the Country Club/Lemay intersection to improve traffic flow and safety
  • Sidewalk access from Country Club Road to Tavelli Elementary
  • Raised crosswalks at several locations to enhance pedestrian safety
  • Improved drainage ditches and culverts between the roadway and the new multiuse path

Cross Section:

The total width is approximately 48–50 feet.
Recommended design for the new roadway cross-section, including the multiuse path and paved shoulders.

Purpose and Need:

The CR 50E corridor is experiencing significant increases in traffic, with future forecasts showing a 50-60% increase by 2045. As one of the only east-west connections in the area, the road has become a shortcut for commuters, creating significant safety concerns for local residents, bicyclists, and pedestrians. This project is a direct response to these issues, with a goal of designing a transportation network that is safer and more efficient for all users. Crash data shows that a high percentage of severe crashes are broadside and rear-end collisions. The proposed improvements are expected to have a "moderate to high potential" for crash reduction.

Project History:

This project is the result of a long-term effort to address the challenges along CR 50E. A comprehensive Corridor Study, completed in early 2023, was used as the basis for the grant application. The study was prepared in conjunction with Larimer County and City of Fort Collins staff, as well as area property owners and stakeholders, to develop recommendations for multimodal travel improvements. Public meetings were also held between March and July 2022 to gather community input.

Existing and Future Conditions Report

Project Schedule:

The overall project is planned in phases, with the schedule dependent on future funding availability.

  • Design: Fall 2025 - 2026
    • Topographic survey and right-of-way research will begin in the fall of 2025
    • A design consultant will be selected in the fall of 2025
    • Design is anticipated to be completed in 2027
  • Right-of-Way Acquisition: 2027
  • Construction (Phase I): 2028

Budget:

Larimer County has been awarded a RAISE grant for the design portion of the project. Construction costs and funding sources have not been identified at this time. Due to the anticipated cost, the project may be constructed in phases over multiple years.
