Suspect Arrested for 2021 Hit-and-Run Death

Four and a half years after a bicyclist was killed in a hit-and-run crash, LCSO has arrested a suspect in the unsolved homicide case.

On October 7, 2021 around 7:15 a.m., Larimer County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a report of a deceased person in the 2200 block of North Shields Street (Fort Collins/unincorporated Larimer County). They found the man, later identified by the Larimer County Coroner as 29-year-old Luis “Darnell” Loma. Photos of Mr. Loma have been provided by his family (view here). 

Colorado State Patrol responded to assist with the case. Investigators determined that Mr. Loma had been riding a bicycle when a vehicle hit him. Evidence at the scene indicated that the suspect vehicle was likely a gray 2009 or 2010 Toyota Rav4 or a similar style SUV.

LCSO conducted interviews, followed up on community tips, and ordered extensive testing on evidence to guide their efforts, but these did not produce any immediate leads. The Investigations division continued working the case over the next several years, using a variety of tools and technology to identify people who may have been involved. From there, they systematically eliminated potential suspects, a resource-intensive process requiring extensive manual research.

By December 2025, investigators had identified a primary suspect. After gathering further evidence, they presented the facts to a judge and successfully obtained a warrant. On April 18, 2026, deputies arrested Nicholas Sierra (DOB 05/08/95) of Loveland. He was booked into the Larimer County Jail on the following charges:

• Failed to Remain at the Scene / Give Information / Aid After Accident Involving Death (class 3 felony)
• Insurance Fraud (class 5 felony)

A booking photo is attached. Sierra was issued a $5,000 cash-only bond by the Larimer County Court.

“Leaving a crash scene, especially one with injuries, is unacceptable. But leaving a devastated family to grieve without closure for years is absolutely unthinkable,” said Larimer County Sheriff John Feyen. “Our investigators never gave up on finding justice for Mr. Loma and his family. While nothing can fully heal the pain of losing this young man, I hope finally having answers brings a small measure of comfort to those who loved him.”
