Suspect Arrested for Carter Lake Area Burglary Spree

A suspect faces 18 charges in connection with a recent burglary spree near Carter Lake.

Between April 20 and April 24, 2026, Larimer County Sheriff’s Office deputies investigated multiple trespassing incidents and break-ins near Carter Lake. During this time, they received nine reports from eight different addresses. After collecting evidence, deputies quickly identified the suspect as Jason Rood (DOB 3/21/72).

Law enforcement spent several days searching the area for Rood and increased patrols in an effort to locate him. Using drone technology, deputies found the suspect at a remote campsite on April 25. He was safely arrested and booked into the Larimer County Jail on five charges; the remaining charges were later filed with the District Attorney’s Office:

Second Degree Burglary - Dwelling (class 3 felony) - 3 counts
Second Degree Burglary - Building (class 5 felony) - 2 counts
Possession of Burglary Tools (class 5 felony)
Attempted First Degree Trespassing (class 6 felony) - 2 counts
Criminal Mischief - $2,000 to $5,000 (class 6 felony)
Criminal Mischief - $300 to $1,000 (class 2 misdemeanor) - 2 counts
Third Degree Trespassing (petty offense) - 2 counts
Theft - Less than $300 (petty offense) - 4 counts
Criminal Mischief - Less than $300 (petty offense)

A booking photo is attached. Rood was issued a $1,000 cash-only bond by the Larimer County Court (based on his five initial arrest charges).

“Regardless of what’s taken, invading someone’s home violates their sense of safety and privacy in a big way,” said Undersheriff Joe Shellhammer. “Our Deputies and Reserves spent days looking for this suspect. Thanks to their search efforts and great use of technology, residents can rest easier.”
