The Larimer County Office on Aging honored two exceptional Larimer County residents for their dedication, commitment, and impact. The Older Americans Month Awards are given annually for Outstanding Senior Volunteer and Outstanding Family Caregiver as a way to honor older adults and caregivers in our community.

The 2026 Outstanding Senior Volunteer Award was presented to Brian Jones.

Jones was nominated by Colleen Meyer and Judith Eastman for his extraordinary volunteer work with A Little Help and the Front Range Forum. Known as a teacher, listener, optimist, and giver, he brings positivity, curiosity, and compassion to every interaction with older adults in Larimer County.

In just two years, Jones completed over 500 service requests and is a highly popular volunteer instructor at the Fort Collins Senior Center, where his hands-on physics classes are in such high demand that a second section was opened. He teaches 50–60 learners aged 50+ each term, igniting curiosity and building community. His lasting impact is a community where older adults feel more connected, empowered, and valued. He is cited by fellow volunteers as a role model who inspires service.

The 2026 Outstanding Family Caregiver Award was presented to Sylvia Hickenlooper.

Sylvia was nominated by Office on Aging case Manager Dani Martin for her dedication to her husband, Ed. Since Ed was left a quadriplegic following a bike accident in September 2021, Sylvia has served as his full-time caregiver while simultaneously working full-time and raising their son.

They have made significant adaptations to their home to ensure Ed can live with dignity and independence. In the past year, Ed has faced serious health complications, including multiple bouts of sepsis, and Sylvia was there through every setback, advocating, caring, and helping him regain strength and hope. Because of Sylvia, Ed has been able to remain at home, surrounded by love, dignity, and purpose.

Congratulations to the 2026 Older Americans Month Award winners, and thank you for your lasting impact on our community!
