Public Asked to Report Contact with Bat Found at Creedmore Lake
The Larimer County Department of Health and Environment is seeking information from anyone who may have had direct contact with a bat found at Creedmore Lake in Red Feather Lakes. The bat was discovered on rocks near the shore during a free fishing day event on June 6, 2026. Since the bat was not tested, its rabies status is unknown, and health officials want to ensure that anyone who may have been directly exposed receives appropriate guidance.
If you, your children, or your pets had direct contact with a bat in this area recently, please notify the Larimer County Department of Health and Environment by calling 970-498-6666. Just having been in the Creedmore Lake area recently is not considered a direct exposure.
While bats are an important part of our ecosystem, some can carry rabies. Transmission of rabies happens when the saliva of an infected animal enters the skin through a bite or scratch from the animal.
Rabies in humans is very rare in the United States, however, it is an extremely serious disease that is fatal in humans and other mammals once symptoms begin to develop. With prompt treatment after exposure and before symptoms appear, rabies can be prevented.
The Health Department reminds residents never to feed or touch wild animals and to ensure pets are current with their rabies vaccinations. If you see a sick or injured wild animal, please call NOCO Humane Animal Protection & Control at 970-226-3647 ext. 7.
