Tips for navigating busy reservoirs this summer

As several surrounding Colorado lakes face closures due to low water levels, Larimer County Natural Resources is reminding community members and visitors that its reservoirs remain open, active, and ready to welcome outdoor enthusiasts.

Because of these nearby closures and limited parking availability, Larimer County reservoirs are hitting capacity earlier and more frequently. To ensure everyone has a fun, safe, and seamless day on the water, park officials are asking visitors to lean into a little extra preparation before heading out.

"We are happy our water levels remain at optimal levels for recreation this summer," said Chris Fleming, Visitor Services Division Manager. "While the crowds are shifting our way, a fantastic lake day is entirely possible with a bit of strategic planning. We’re asking our community to shift their habits slightly so everyone can enjoy the water safely."

Top Recommendations:

  • Subscribe to reservoir parking alerts: Text the keyword lcboating to (833) 581-0014. You will be notified directly when the reservoir’s parking area is at capacity.
  • Opt for visiting on weekdays or weeknights: Skip the Saturday rush entirely. Mid-week visits offer a much more serene, open experience on the water.
  • Be a weekend early bird or later gator: Aim for early mornings (before 8 a.m.) or late afternoons/early evenings (after 2 p.m.) on weekends when the first wave of day-trippers begins to head home.
  • Have an alternate location in mind: If your destination is full, consider exploring other nearby recreation areas like Carter Lake (perfect for boaters, paddlers, and swimmers) or Pinewood Reservoir (a quiet haven optimized for paddlers).
  • Practice patience and courtesy at boat ramps and to all park staff: To keep the boat ramps moving efficiently, we ask boaters not to block the ramps with your boat while waiting for your trailer and stay mindful of the launch order so everyone gets their turn smoothly.

Entrance to Carter Lake, Horsetooth, and Pinewood Reservoirs requires county entrance fees. Please note that county-managed reservoirs and open spaces are not included in the state’s "Keep Colorado Wild Pass" or the federal "America the Beautiful Pass.”

Essential Water Safety Checklist

When planning for a successful day on the water, park officials also encourage you to bring:

  • Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) for everyone, including paddlers.
  • Sober captain. Larimer County has zero tolerance for mixing alcohol, drugs, and operating a boat.
  • Sunscreen and drinking water.
