Clarification on AI misinformation on federal property tax benefits

Some Larimer County offices and the Larimer County Assessor have received recent inquiries regarding alleged new federal property tax benefits, exemptions, and tax forms.

It has come to our attention that this information stems from AI-generated misinformation currently circulating on social media and video platforms.

The Division of Property Taxation has reviewed this information and has not found any evidence of the programs or legislation that the videos and social media posts are claiming.

Our research confirms the following information:

  • No Federal Property Tax Legislation: There are no federal laws or programs that provide automatic property tax freezes, assessment caps, or specific school tax exemptions as described in these viral posts. Property tax administration remains exclusively a state and local responsibility.
  • Form 1098-SR Does Not Exist: This is not a valid IRS form. The IRS issues Form 1098 (Mortgage Interest Statement) and Form 1040-SR (U.S. Tax Return for Seniors), but neither of these documents relates to the property tax exemptions or caps cited in the videos and social media posts.

We understand that this misinformation may confuse taxpayers in your communities. Please continue to advise constituents that no such federal changes are affecting their Colorado property taxes. If taxpayers have questions regarding their federal tax obligations, please encourage them to consult a qualified tax professional.
