Aerobic Decomposition – Degradation of organic matter by microorganisms, requiring oxygen.

Anaerobic Decomposition – Degradation of organic matter by microorganisms in the absence of oxygen.

Biochar - A charcoal used as a soil amendment that is stable, rich in carbon, and can remain in soil for many years. Biochar can increase agricultural productivity and mitigate climate change.

The three ways to minimize the amount of trash thrown away: Reduce, reuse and recycle. (See below for definitions of each.)

Trash Bag Relay

Turn a relay race in to an investigative, hands-on trash sort!  Students have fun as they learn the concepts of reduce, reuse and recycle.

Materials

  • Two bags of identical clean trash.  Use an assortment of bottles, cans, packaging, paper products, old clothes, and toy food. Make sure you have enough for each child to have at least one turn.
  • Two trash cans
  • Two recycling bins

Activity

There are currently no restrictions at the landfill.

Recyclable Materials - May 2025

This table shows the current prices offered by the Larimer County Recycling Center for recyclable materials. THE MINIMUM LOAD REQUIRED IS 400 POUNDS, EXCEPT FOR ALUMINUM. Any amount of aluminum (cans only) is accepted. PLASTIC BAGS ARE NOT ALLOWED.
